The Zipp 202 Firecrest has been transformed for 2014 making it stiffer, lighter and more aerodynamic. Instead of being designed specifically for racing the updated 2014 Firecrest is now ideal for every road you travel on. The wheel retains the classic 32mm rim depth of its predecessor though, with the Firecrest profile, now has a wider 25.4mm max rim width. The results redefine whats possible with a do-it-all classic road wheel.

The Firecrest rim shape improves stability by moving the wheels centre of pressure to sit almost directly over the steering axis, where wind-produced steering torque has a minimal effect. For strength and rigidity, the Firecrest 202 utilizes unidirectional fibres to handle tensile and comprehensive loading within the rim. This has been further reinforced by using woven fibres in the spoke-hole areas. A woven silica-ceramic fabric and a woven carbon fabric encapsulate the braking and tyre-mounting surfaces. The combination of fibre patterns creates the highest stiffness-to-weight ratio in Zipp production.

For the front wheel Zipp use their lightweight 88 hub which features high-precision, Swiss bearings and a 17mm axle, creating one of the stiffest road hubs available. The Zipp 88 was designed with fully adjustable bearing preload via an ultra-fine threaded collar. Zipp's larger Swiss-made bearings are two and a half times rounder than most others in the bike industry and yield a 28% higher load capacity. The hub has a 18 hole count and weighs only 88g.

On the rear wheel Zipp use the latest iteration of the 188 rear hub, the V9 along with new spoke-lacing pattern that results in improved stiffness and durability. The hub was developed in cooperation of sprinter Mark Cavendish and after using the hub for over 8,000 miles his feedback helped Zipp to optimize the hubs flange geometry, stiffness and weight. The hub features larger precision Swiss bearings for increased durability, virtual 3 cross lacing on both sides of the rear wheel to improve stiffness, achieving 3 cross stiffness in a 2 cross pattern with a new spoke geometry. With 25% more torsional stiffness than a leading competitive hub the 188/V9 is ideal for out-of-the saddle sprints and climbs.

The 188/V9 is 10/11 speed compatible and is available with Shimano/SRAM or Campagnolo freehub.
