Q & A

Shimano have stepped up the game with the new Deore Disc brake, with a completely redesigned caliper allowing you to run the high performance Ice-Tech brake pads, turning an already reliable brake into a super stopper with improved power and cooling that doesn't brake the bank (see what we did there?). On top of that the new Deore brakes are also I-Spec B Compatible, allowing you to free up some space in your cockpit.

With technology having filtered down through the Shimano ranges, you'd be forgiven for mistaking the Deore for a brake at twice the price, with the ultimate main difference being weight, and let's face it, when you have a few £££ extra in your pocket you're not going to be concerned about the extra weight.

The mineral oil brake fluid specified by Shimano is non-corrosive and less hazardous than conventional hydraulic brake fluid, whilst the shim-less mounting system allows for quick installation and set-up. This kit also contains sintered pads, plus spare olives and insert should you wish to adjust the length of the cuttable hoses. Front or rear versions are available, please select from options.

Hose length: Front 1000mm, Rear 1700mm
Note: Kit does not include brake disc rotors and caliper mounting adaptors - Ice-Tech pads sold separately

Quicker response and more power; two elements that every rider appreciates. Thanks to the Shimano original cam mechanism, the Servo Wave mechanism brake lever creates 20 percent more power over a regular actuation lever, while achieving quicker pad contact (allowing the pads to be spaced further apart to reduce disc rubbing when not in use).
The Servo Wave mechanism minimizes the length of free stroke without sacrificing the initial lever position, at the same time you earn enough lever travel for better modulation.

Great value package 20 Oct 2014
By Rick Shaw
I brought these as a replacement for my stock Stroker Ryde set-up after they wore out. I've always heard good things about Shimano brakes and in particular looked at the differences between Deore (which are very cheap at this price) and the XT and SLX which are more expensive. In terms of stopping power I would say there is pretty much no difference in performance between the Deores and the XT's from what I can tell thus far (I have borrowed a bike with XT's as a means of comparison). The main differences are some of the finishing where Deore's are given a very plain looking, fractionally heavier lever/reseviour and also use a split pin to hold the pads in place into the callipers (whereas the XT's use a sturdier bolt through - although on closer inspection the Deore's do have a threaded hole to take the pad retaining bolts should you wish to fit these instead - something which I intend to do as the split pins aren't as strong). Bang for buck they are great brakes for the money and could be easily tweeked to be even better still. Pads and parts are readily available for these and all in all they are a good trail system!

Just want to add that after a weeks abuse in the Atlas Mountains I'm still very happy with this product... Only cons are that the hoses are a bit long.

I bought these after reading rave reviews in a magazine ...and they don't disappoint . I replaced my Avid Elixir 3's front and rear with these...they were easy to fit, bed in fast and are powerful...first ride was on The Beast of Brenin (black rated) and they performed faultlessly.
