Specification

Despite being one of the more affordable choices in Scott's 2012 line-up, the Scale 29 Comp is also one of the best value - it shares a custom butted 6061 aluminium frame with its more expensive siblings, and takes advantage of all Scott know about producing a lightweight and lively hardtail that's ready for race numbers. With masses of upgrade potential it's perhaps the perfect choice for those riders that want to see what all the fuss is about before investing heavily or indeed anyone with a C2W voucher burning a hole in their pocket.

About Scott
Founded in 1958 by Ed Scott, a talented engineer and competitive skier, the company launched the worlds first tapered aluminium ski pole to universal acclaim, setting a precedent of technical innovation that continues to this day. After moving through motocross the first mountain bike model was launched in 1986, whilst the 1989 Tour De France saw the debut of the aerodynamic handlebar that famously helped Greg Lemond to claim the yellow jersey from the late Laurent Fignon in the legendary final time trial on the cobbles of the Champs-Élysées.

The 1990’s saw Scott establish themselves firmly within the MTB market, with world cup winning forks, the worlds first carbon fibre mountain bike the Endorphin, and the worlds lightest full suspension MTB’s the G-Zero in 98 and Strike in 2000. Today Scott offers a comprehensive and progressive range of bikes, with all models, from the entry level Aspect or Sportster to the high end Genius LT, Addict and women specific Contessa ranges featuring the most advanced construction techniques, components and materials available. Pioneers of Carbon Fibre in both road and mountain applications; the CR1 and IMP production techniques coupled with exclusive HMF and HMX carbon fibre grades allow for some of the lightest and strongest bikes on the market today, whilst innovative frame design and close links with leading component manufacturers such as DT Swiss ensure that all Scott bikes perform flawlessly at all levels.

The crux of a 29'er (29" wheeled MTB) is it's ability roll better over terrain than a 26" wheeled counterpart due to a decreased attack angle (the wheel curve transitions more gradually from vertical to horizontal) and a larger tyre contact patch to help you float over, rather than dig into loose surfaces, rocks and roots; preserving momentum and giving a faster, smoother ride.

The concept is nothing new however and stretches back to the birth of mountain biking itself (before 26" became the accepted norm) championed by early adopters such as Gary Fisher before a lack of frames and parts all but killed them off. Thanks to a recent resurgence in the World Cup XC race series however 29'ers have been brought back from obscurity and, with a number of major bike and component manufacturers throwing their weight behind the class they are set to become a much more common sight out on the trails.

Ideal for very tall riders who struggle with the frame geometry of standard mountain bikes, the bigger wheels of a 29er position the axles higher, allowing for a lower centre of gravity without the risks associated with running a low bottom bracket. Yet as with everything there are disadvantages to go with the advantages; increased wheel flex renders them unsuitable for more aggressive AM / DH riding at present, steering input is invariably slower resulting in reduced manouverability and with bigger frames and wheels overall bike weight will always be higher.
The question remains; do the disadvantages outweigh the advantages? unfortunately we have no definitive answer but urge you to try one and decide for yourself, it might just be a revelation.
